Sustainable Farming -Asheville Though the Generations- Early settlers in the Carolinas, my “far-grandparents” being among them, borrowed agricultural practices from the Native Americans. They incorporated them into their own farming practices creating a sustainable way of life that included orchards and vegetable gardens. (see Part 1 for details). Those first settlers helped to shape the farms, farming and settlement patterns of the southern Appalachian mountain region people in the Carolinas carry on to this day.
Here is a slideshow that takes you on a tour of tour of family farms and farmlands in the Asheville, NC area and brings you to visit some of our tailgate (farmers’) markets. You may not be able to guess which of the photos is one of my all-time favorites…but I’d love to know what you’d guess…

JaneAnne - I love the Native American story, very nice touch. I also noticed that you used a photo slide show which really tells the story. I like that, pretty neat. I will have to put that in my tool box too.
Hi there JaneAnne, this is a tough one to choose a favorite. The barn with the clouds, the tomatoes close up and the rolling hills (Smokies in back?) are beautiful but the garden gate and with the family in the field are really nice too!

Good Morning JaneAnne, Very nice sideshow and I am guessing that one of your favorites is the old Grey barn. These old barns are fast becoming icons of the way our farms were the food basket of America and the world over. Sadly that seems to be changing. The family farms are about the only real wholesome lifestyle left in our country.
janeAnne, I'm not sure which of these would be your favorite but my favorite (isn't it about me?) is the vertical long range view of the barn with the fabulous clouds.
