I wrote a post about buildings with green roofs not long ago. I talked about Roof Color (a lighter-colored roof reflects more heat than a dark-colored roof. That's a good-to-know if you are into energy efficiency.) I mentioned Stormwater Runoff (itcan flow over impervious surfaces picking up pollutants and wash them into rivers and streams, and can cause flooding and erosion, but a green roof can reduce and filters stormwater runoff.)
And then I went on to explain that . According to Wikipedia, green roof is partially or completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium, planted over a waterproofing membrane. It may also include additional layers such as a root barrier and drainage and irrigation systems."
And I did say that here in Asheville, NC, many people think that green roofs offer a wide array of public and private benefits including food production, charming outdoor spaces, oxygen production, building insulation, heat absorption, and water filtration.
But today, while previewing a potential green renovation project, I saw this googly-green roof!! (see photo that follows)
And I had to laugh when I asked myself...Is this the first image that pops into one's imagination when one envisions a green roof is??
I bet it is! Tell me, tell me...The Green Roof. -What's YOUR Perception?

LOL -- what a funny photo. Unfortunately, I have seen a couple of "green roofs" that look very much like this one. I did once see a beautiful green roof in San Francisco.. I can't recall the building however.
Joan~
LOL is right...and if you think that's funny..HoHo..You should have seen me standing on tip-toe perched on a dubious-looking step to get this shot =)
Seriously, though, we do have an amazing green roof on Asheville's Blue Ridge Parkway LEED Certified Visitors' Center. Come on down to see it in person ...
love the green roof. However...it is not practical in warm sunny Phoenix. We are at about 110 degrees today.
Bryan~
I bet you never have seen a green roof like the one in the photo I took yesterday, eh? At least not in your part of the world...
...however...when it comes to the real thing..Green Roofs... I did hear that in your neighboring state, Texas, some action is happening with TX Green Roofs.. "Texas to become a leading example of growing smart instead of just growing."
janeAnne,
I wonder if it would support a dairy cow?
Mike in Tucson
Mike~ LOL!!! Maybe a pygmie goat or three...but they might eat it!!!
Now that sure looks like a green roof to us. ...although it does seem a bit unkempt.
