Eco Friendly Real Estate Blog: Un-Retirement Asheville Style

Un-Retirement Asheville Style

In Asheville, N.C., the phrase "young at heart" rings true. How can that be? Possibly the mountains around Asheville contribute to the lively spirit. Or maybe it is that Cultural Creatives, attracted to the possibilities here, understand that the word "retirement" simply means letting go of a phase of life to experience something new and exciting. This, from one of our home buyers expresses it so well:

"I could not be happier.  I love my house and yard and have turned the back yard into a vegetable garden.  I have also planted raspberry bushes and strawberries and 2 apple trees.  In the front in the area over the little hill next to the driveway I have 5 raised beds and have planted 11 blueberry bushes besides more vegetables.  I love working outside and just growing "things".

I have continued to take classes at the Reuter center, hike with the Asheville New Friends group, joined the Southern Mountain Appalachian Conservancy and hike with them often, joined a couple of "raw food" groups... on Monday I am going with a group from our Blue Ridge Naturalist program to Fontana lake for 3 days of hiking and  learning about the history of the area. We went over to the Smokies a month ago to hike and look at wildflowers and had a wonderful time. As you can see my life is rich and full. ...."

In a recent look at Asheville where second and vacation homes often become permanent residences, Asheville PromiseMartha Teichner of CBS  visited Asheville, N.C., to explore how some are designing more creative retirements.

Asheville is "on just about every top ten list of the best places to retire in the U.S... Then there's deepening inner stillness....," she reported.
