HERS Ratings and the Do-It-Yourself Home-Energy Audit

Take the Do-It-Yourself  Home-Energy Audit

I bet YOU already know that  most homes can save 25% to 50% or more energy, right?  Healthy Built- GREEN HOME Asheville NC

A home energy audit can help point the way to savings. But sometimes it takes a while before the home energy rater/auditor can get to your home.  So in the meantime, you can start right away with a do-it-yourself home energy audit .  We like to put this on our Spring 2-Do List each year.

If you decide this is the year to sell your home, a professional home energy audit might be a BIG PLUS.The HERS Rater will investigate the general condition of heating and air conditioning systems,  look at  insulation, and the degree of outside air infiltration, the operation and condition of lighting, and reviewing the efficiency of water heating systems and appliances, and give you a report.

Buyers today are really interested in energy efficiency and dollar savings. By having professionally prepared information on hand, like the HERS rating, you can stand out in the crowd.

FUN PART you and kids might like:  HERS Raters might bring some handy instruments with them to do blower door  tests.to measure the extent of leaks in the building envelope. One of our things to see is what happens when they use infrared cameras   ...to reveal hard-to-detect areas of air infiltration and missing insulation.

NOTE:: The home shown here is brand new construction and has passed all the HERS tests. That's one Big Plus when you step in the door! If you are buying a new home in Asheville...ask if it is either LEED Certified or NC Healthy Built.

JaneAnn -- I think more buyers are going to be interested in energy savings than ever before.  I think an energy audit is a great idea.

Wow! so true!

I was certified as a BPI Building Analyst last week. The blower door test is amazing...talk about money out the windows...the walls...through the attic...

Especially the attic...look closely at the plumbing chase!

Great & timely post in light of the bill through congress this week!

Peace ~

Carole~ I like the idea of saving energy and $$$  especially when it is so easy to arrange...

Joan~I agree. Our clients are demanding energy efficient thinking. AND...Those sellers who take the time to do an energy audit get buyer interest when it is mentioned by listing agents.

Jennifer~YAY!! New appliances. I wonder what your energy bill will like like when you get a new energy efficient refrigerator...

Mary~  Tell us more about the Bill in Congress...and congratulations on the BPI certification. May be time for a trip down the road and over to the mountains to see what sustainable innovation looks like in Asheville.

janeAnne, reading this reminds me that I need to have my central air system checked!  Old houses like mine have lots of leaks!  Some of mine are plugged up and others not.  Gotta get crackin'!

Pat~

"get crackin'" is right on!!! Pun intended =_)

Definitely a great way to see if there are areas of the home that can be improved!

HERS obviously is an acronym, but for what? I don't know, so I'm wondering if your Clients do.

Jane Anne, Thank you for sharing this good energy saving information with us.

Jim , HERS stands for Home Energy Rating System ! It is a scale , usually from 100 to 0 , which shows the Energy Efficiency of the home . A home with a HERS Rating of 85 is 15% better than code requires , which is the bare minimum for Energy Star certification . My average Energy Star Home has a HERS Rating of 56 which is 44% better than a code built home . There are actually Homes with (-) negative HERS Ratings , which mean they generate more energy than they consume ! Thanks Jane Anne for the post ! Keepin' it Green !
