An Asheville area aspiring LEED Certified® green builder we know is always on the lookout for remarkable and sustainable elements she can incorporate in her projects. She is especially intrigued when elements not only are environmentally responsible, but infuse spaces with an artistic quality. So, knowing her aptitude for finding excellent products, it was really no surprise when, on a recent visit to he
r home,
we discovered glass tile-and in a place we had not expected-on the floor of her laundry room! This creative professional assembled a gorgeous presentation of color and light. No trepidation when stepping on this recycled glass. It simply sparkles with an invitation to enter. As you can see by my photo, the surface offers an uncommon, yet very attractive look and feel. There is the glow of artisanship.
Fascinated with the effect and the affect I asked,
"How is this glass on the floor working out for you?"
"I'm very, very pleased!" she responded with enthusiasm. "Glass on the floor, in this case, is not something to worry about. And caring for it is simple."

that floor is beautiful.....is it slippery when wet???
I've seen some of this tile and been wonder how it holds up to foot traffic with shoes on. You link didn't work for me. Does the product have another name besides glass tile?
Barbara~
Good question! I will ask if the floor is slippery (or more slippery than "regular" floors) when wet.
Beautiful floor. Thanks for sharing. Best wishes for continued success.
Hi Glenn~
I typed in "recycled glass tiles" on Google and found that there are numerous suppliers of recycled glass tiles.

What a glamorous place to do the laundry! I love the look of glass tiles -- this is the first I've ever seen with them on the floor. Great idea for post!
janeAnne,
Very beautiful and what a wonderful idea...I had never thought of glass for floors before.
Jo
JaneAnne, I have seen a lot of laundry room floors but I must say that has to be the most creative. Is it slippery?
WOW! - I have seen glass tile used in backsplashes in Bathrooms and Kitchens, but not on floors! Interesting. Must say it certainly does look impressive.
Here's a response from the builder about the floor....
"I was concerned about two things:
1. the rough edges that make the tile so beautiful! I worried they would be rough and we might hurt ourselves on them. Not a problem though. Haven't had any issues at all.
2. that glass on the floor is kind of nuts and we'd be slipping all over the place. Again, hasn't happened. If I ran around the bathroom, dancing, with soaked feet, then who knows. I think the fact that they are small pieces rather than huge expanses of glass helps out with slipping. The grout to glass ratio is pretty high."
Hope that answers some questions...
Oh my gosh I LOVE that floor!!! Green sure is beautiful!
