WAY BACK in the Summer of 2007 HGTV's House Hunters' crew flew in to
Asheville, NC to videotape the story of a couple (our clients) and their search for a green home.
The couple ended up deciding to purchase an older home, and then to retrofit it to their own eco-specifications...It would be "Ultra-Green".
In the meantime, the producers at the HGTV House HuntersShow had been planning ahead. They had their own hunt going on. As a result of their efforts, HGTV found us and began taping for a Green Week segment to be aired in 2009!
Seems like a long, long time since we met up with the folks from HGTV.
So much has happened in the housing market since 2007, but Asheville's green-built homesand retrofits continue to be in strong demand here in Asheville. Asheville is one of the Lucky 7 real estate markets where properties continue to appreciate. Our green real estate market is growing each year.
And now GREEN WEEK, 2009 is about to unfold.... Yes!
We all are very excited to see the segment the HGTV crew videotaped in our offices(see photo) and on location at the couple's "new" home here in Asheville as the green retrofit project evolved throughout 2008.
HERE is YOUR invitation to join the viewing with us next week.
Green Week Air Date and Time: Wednesday, April 22nd, 9:00PM EST.
Back Story- HOW HGTV FO
UND US HERE IN ASHEVILLE, NC
Active Rain Colleagues, you may be interested in how HGTV found us. They contacted us after reading a number of posts to the ECO-All-Stars Group posted on my BLOG right here at Active Rain.
THANKS Active Rain! Here's a big Green Thumbs Up for you.
The HGTV crew noted that there is huge audience interest in sustainable design, green building and retrofitting, our market niche at Eco-Steward Realty. In fact, our real estate firm decided years ago to add our support to Asheville's "New Urbanist" Plan. The Plan calls for business and property owners on Haywood Road (just across the street from our offices seen in the photo here) to create a development pattern along Haywood.
As ECO real estate professionals we are interested in avoiding urban sprawl. We advocate compact, transit-oriented, walkable, bicycle-friendly land use, including mixed-use development. Our neighborhood, Lucerne Park, is an awesome, diverse neighborhood with historical charm.
The Eco-Steward Firm invested in our 1923 brick bungalow (see photo) because we find the neighborhood not only
charming, but convenient (transit-oriented, walkable, bicycle-friendly.)
The building itself is a ‘work in progress", but is about 90% restored. We have
1) replaced all light bulbs throughout the entire building with compact fluorescents
2) are proud of our non-toxic flooring throughout...gorgeous old hardwoods and, in the kitchen, marmoleum
3 have used non-toxic paints
4) are beginning to replace all the windows with energy efficient windows
We recycle, of course. No chemicals are used on our lot. We hope to have an organic garden next year.
We are a resource center. Our building not only is a lovely place to meet our clients, but is a place where we have the opportunity to give back to the community-
We support local artists... If/when you come to Asheville and visit our offices, you will notice the nature photography, pottery, and wall art. Our coffee cups are the work of a local potter. We are proud to be a contributing member of the Asheville community...neighborhood meetings and educational events have taken place here.
We offer objective fiduciary counsel and act in tandem with ecologists, land planners, green developers, architects, builders and so forth. . ..
The HGTV shoot was a good time...
It is going to be fun to see how all this plays out next week.!!
We hope you will put this on your calendar and tune in:
Green Week Air Date and Time: Wednesday, April 22nd, 9:00PM EST...and let us know what you think!
THANKS AGAIN ACTIVE RAIN!

Very cool!
I will check it out.
Hey, If they want to see an outstanding Straw Bale and an in-progress Cob built studio... you know where to send them...
Hi JaneAnne - Congrats on the segment - kind of like winning the ultimate eCO-All-Stars 'Chanllenge of the Year+" award?
House Hunters is one of my favorite shows (I wonder why :-)). I put this on my calendar but do send a reminder out so I don't miss this! Sylvia
I remember you telling us about this - very cool! You are marked on my calendar.
janeAnne, What exciting news! I can't wait for the segment! You rock girlfriend!
Congratulation!! So many of my clients watch HGTV - such great exposure for something that promotes GREEN. My next designation is going to be for green - so many more people are becoming conscious of it which is great.
Yippee!!! That is so awesome and you are so deserving! I remember the 2007 post...wow time flies! You are a great role model for Eco-stewardship and when i read your post it encourages me to be more responsible in my life... thanks for the push and congrats on going national!
Hi JaneAnne -- How exciting. What a wonderful thing you are doing in Asheville and I hope the recognition you get from HGTV helps spur this much-needed endeavor even more. My best to you and everyone involved.
JaneAnne, Thanks for alerting me. I can tape this segment and watch it during the day:) I cant wait to see it. Congratulations on all you have done with your community!
JaneAnne,
What you are doing is fabulous! I adore Asheville, and it has become a haven for the artisic and green-minded. You are fortunate to live and work there. I encourage you to continue the great work you have instituted in this fabulous area of North Carolina.

Very cool Will look forward to the show.
janeAnne,
I got your email, and had to stop by to say CONGRATS! Super cool.
Mike in Tucson
That's awesome stuff.
"We support local artists.." That's cool. Take that one step GREENER and support local businesses (which I'm sure you do, you just didn't say it). There's a lot to be said (although I won't say it in order to keep my comment readable) for shopping, eating, and buying at locally-owned businesses whenever possible.
Great job janeAnne--The more we get the word out there the better!
janeAnne, your absolute focus and commitment should be cloned. In fact, I vote for that very thing--janeAnne on the Beautiful Olympic Peninsula, creating EcoSteward Assets Realty. What say you? You must be thrilled--can hardly wait to see this segment.
What an exciting time for you janeAnne. I've marked it on my calendar to watch the show on April 22. You go girl green....
janeAnne - what a coup de etat! Congratulations and what fun! Anymore it's hard to find a client who doesn't watch HGTV - hope it brings you lots of business.
This is awesome janeAnne. You never cease to surprise me with your incredibile passion and role in the Green Housing efforts in your community as well as serving as a role model for many of us! Congratulations!
How cool is that !?! Congratulations
I envy you. I have an EcoBroker designation but I live in a non-walkable, gas guzzling car culture. As the ranks of builders are thinning becasue of strict lending rules, I have been trying to convince builders to adopt more green building. The standard answer is, the public is not ready. You have already exposed that lie. I am going to send builders here the word about the show. Maybe the reality of free publicity will get them going.
This must have been fun. I watch HGTV occassionally and this is a great show to be on. Congrats tio you JaneAnne
janeAnne - I work with a Green builder here in Pennsylvania and have been educating the local realtors on the benefits of Green. One of the things we try to emphasize is that the demand for Green and energy efficiency is real and becoming greater all the time. As you have experienced, the client is asking for Green features and homes, but there is not much inventory available.
Congrats on the show, I'll be watching.
Nice story, Janeanne. You should TIvo it and post it on your blog.
I had a well-known builder contact me today about working with him as he moves into green (really) homes. I'm jazzed. Seems he's been watching my AR blog...
Everyone~
THANKS so much for your kind comments...I will post a reminder later this week =)
Hi JaneAnne - I did watch the segment. Loved Ashville and the Realtor who worked in your office, but i was disappointed that I did not get to see you on TV. Hopefully I will see you there next year.
