“Hang on to the straps above your head!....” the sportscaster pronounced. It was North Carolina's Webb Simpson and he was 
about to win his first PGA Golf Tournament. As I watched, holding my breath because I have followed Webb's career and his near wins, Webb sank that final putt and raised his smiling face to a cheering audience.
“Hang on to the straps above your head!....” INDEED! Not only did this North Carolina man win the Wyndham Golf Classic at Greensboro, NC yesterday…but he won my heart ...
As he stood holding his 6-month old Baby James, with a prominent sports reporter and big shining trophy at his elbow, (a trophy we all know he has worked to win for years and years,)...
and as the cameras flashed and the noise of media celebration heightened, Baby James began to protest loudly and frantically…(see photo from Getty Images) ...At that point there was an inconvenient choice to be made...and Webb made it!
Rather than pass his son off, ignoring his needs, Webb chose that very inconvenient choice- to comfort his son!
He held him close and with great tenderness.
He looked him in the eye and spoke softly to him.
He chose first to look out for his son’s welfare.
WAY TO GO, WEBB!! This is the spirit of Fatherhood that many of Webb's fans, like me, consider to be a model of parenting - a marvelous triumph of the courage to keep one's highest priorities in place.
Possibly, golfers know that this kind of inspiration is the foundation beneath the challenge of Real Green Golf. It is about honor. It is about making wise choices. It is about "hanging on to the Straps Above your [own] head...." Call me a sentimental Grandma, if you will, but this simple choice demonstrates what has made me a fan of Webb Simpson…for Life!
